The Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has brought charges against Shehu Abdu and Isah Saidu for providing false information to the Commission. The duo was arraigned before Justice A. Isiaka for their alleged involvement in a case concerning Ji Zhou, a Chinese national arrested by the EFCC for illegal mining of solid minerals and economic sabotage.
According to a statement released by the commission, Abdu and Saidu presented themselves as friends of Ji Zhou and stood as sureties for him when he was granted administrative bail by the EFCC. They claimed to be well-acquainted with Zhou and promised to produce him whenever required by the Commission, agreeing to forfeit a bail bond of N10,000,000.00 (Ten Million Naira) if they failed to do so. Zhou was released to them based on their assurances. However, when Zhou was needed by the Commission, Abdu and Saidu failed to produce him, revealing that they did not actually know him but were paid by Zhou through his lawyer with the sum of N40,000 (Forty Thousand Naira) to act as his sureties.
The charge against Abdu states that he provided false information to a public servant on the 8th of May, 2023, in Kaduna, leading to the release of Ji Zhou on administrative bail. This act, had the true facts been known, would not have been carried out by the public servant. Abdu is accused of violating Section 105(a) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, and is punishable under Section 105 of the same Law.
Similarly, the charge against Saidu alleges that on the 10th of May, 2023, in Kaduna, he provided false information to a public servant resulting in the release of Ji Zhou on administrative bail. This action, based on misrepresented facts, would not have been taken by the public servant if the true state of affairs had been known. Saidu is facing charges under the same sections of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, as Abdu.
The case against Abdu and Saidu is ongoing, and they are expected to appear before the court for further proceedings.
