Nyesom Wike has responded to remarks made by PDP chieftain Bode George, who recently claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was responsible for ‘making’ the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister.
The controversy arose after the FCT Administration sealed the PDP Headquarters in Abuja over unpaid ground rent. Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, George criticized the FCT Minister’s actions and said the PDP ‘brought Wike to life,’ implying that Wike should not have locked the party’s headquarters.
George said, “Regarding the locking up of our party’s headquarters, it is absolutely sacrilegious, unacceptable, and culturally inadmissible. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is my political son. This is the party that brought you to life. It’s like going back to your village and locking your family house. They haven’t paid some ground rent, and you are the chairman of the local government. The next thing you will do… How much were we owing? N7 million, which you could have paid. Think of it as if it were your father’s property. The same party that gave you the ticket to be local government chairman, the ticket to be Chief of Staff to a governor under PDP, you became Minister of State under PDP, and you served as governor for eight years under PDP… Who brought you up? Who made you?”
In response, Wike addressed George’s comments during a media parley, stating:
“I read what he said. If an old man has no job, he should sit down in his house and read newspapers. Bode George said PDP made me and gave me a national name. I agree — the party made me. But a party cannot make you; it is the individual who makes the party popular and wins elections. The party does not make itself popular.
I agree that PDP made me. But ask Bode George: who has PDP made in Lagos? If the party makes people, who in Lagos has the party made since 1999? Not one member in the House of Assembly, House of Representatives, or Senate. And yet, here he is talking to me — someone who has campaigned and worked hard to make the PDP a major party both in the state and at the national level.”
