Prominent South African businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his wife, Tsakani Matlala, are currently in police custody following serious allegations that they orchestrated a failed hit on Matlala’s former partner, socialite and TV personality Tebogo Thobejane.
The shocking details emerged during a bail hearing held at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Friday. According to police, Tsakani was arrested the night before, and both she and her husband will remain behind bars until their next court appearance scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.
The case stems from a brazen shooting incident in October 2023, when unknown gunmen opened fire on Thobejane’s vehicle in the upscale Johannesburg suburb of Sandton. Although Thobejane survived the attack unharmed, her passenger sustained serious injuries and required extensive hospitalization.
The Matlalas appeared in court alongside two other accused—Musa Kekana (35) and Tiego Floyd Mabusela (43). Legal representatives for the accused successfully petitioned the court to prohibit media photography during proceedings, citing privacy concerns.
During the hearing, Vusi Matlala’s lawyer, Victor Nkwashu, expressed his client’s willingness to surrender his passport if granted bail. Meanwhile, the defense teams for Kekana and Mabusela requested their clients be moved to the Johannesburg Correctional Facility due to reportedly poor conditions in their current detention centers.
Prosecutors confirmed that the two alleged hitmen will appear separately in court on July 11, with their trial expected to be heard in the Johannesburg High Court. Legal experts anticipate a protracted legal battle, given the complexity of the case and the number of individuals involved.
As the investigation unfolds, the case continues to draw widespread public attention, casting a shadow over one of South Africa’s well-known business figures and sparking renewed conversations about violence, power, and influence in high-profile circles.
