The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has exposed a sophisticated drug trafficking scheme involving the concealment of cocaine inside traditional Nigerian ceremonial attire. The traffickers hid the drugs in caps known as ‘fila’ and female headgears called ‘gele’, both commonly worn as part of ‘aso-ebi’ ensembles.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi revealed the operation on Sunday, May 18, sharing images and video footage of the seized items. He emphasized the creativity of traffickers and issued a strong warning to the public.
“In case you’re asked to carry aso-ebi fila and gele (traditional male caps and female headgear) as part of your luggage to Europe or elsewhere, the recent seizure of cocaine hidden in such items by #ndlea_nigeria should make you think twice,” Babafemi cautioned.
This bust is part of the agency’s ongoing campaign against drug smuggling networks, which are becoming increasingly inventive in their methods. The arrest follows closely on the heels of an interception involving an oil tanker modified with a concealed compartment for drug trafficking within Nigeria.
Authorities urge Nigerians to stay vigilant and avoid transporting unfamiliar packages abroad, especially those disguised as clothing or cultural items. The NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug syndicates and safeguarding the nation from the devastating effects of narcotics.
