Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the party cannot afford to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the North.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on May 12, Wike emphasized the importance of fairness and regional balance within the party.

“PDP can’t send the presidency to the North! I have told them. Selfishness can kill a system. Take, for example: if Mr. President runs and wins in 2027, by 2031 the APC will likely send their presidential ticket to the North. What will the PDP do then? Come back again and say, ‘Since APC has brought it to the North, let’s also keep it in the North’? What kind of smartness is that?” he said.

When questioned about his loyalty to the PDP—especially in light of his perceived closeness with the APC, his role in the APC-led federal government, and his support for defections from the PDP to the APC—Wike maintained that he has not left the PDP.

“Justice must be done. It was injustice… I never left the party. I came out to say this injustice will not stand. I will not support it,” he explained.

Responding to accusations that his actions are tearing the party apart, Wike responded:

“No, I am not. I am building it.”

It will be recalled that Wike openly opposed the PDP and its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the last general election. He cited the party’s failure to honor a zoning agreement that would have rotated the presidential ticket to the South while keeping the party’s national chairmanship in the North.
