Chris Piwuna, a professor of medicine and consultant psychiatrist, has been elected the new president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). His appointment was officially confirmed by his predecessor, Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday.

Piwuna’s election follows a four-day voting process from May 8 to 12, during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State. He triumphed over Adamu Babayo, a professor from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), securing the position. While ASUU has yet to release an official statement, Osodeke noted that a formal announcement is expected soon. With this election, Piwuna becomes the 14th president of the union.

A former dean of student affairs at the University of Jos, Piwuna holds an MBBS degree from the institution, which he earned in 2000. He also obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Malta in 2013. Piwuna is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians and a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association.

Currently a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, he is a former head of the psychiatry unit. Piwuna’s academic work primarily focuses on the quality of life in older adults, and he has published several research articles in peer-reviewed journals.
