The Lagos State Government has commenced the demolition of structures built on the right of way of the Ikota River alignment in Megamound Estate, Oral Estate, and Lekki County.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating that the demolition exercise began on Friday, May 9.
“Following the expiration of served notices, operatives from the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources on Friday commenced the removal of contravening structures within Megamound Estate and Oral Estate along the Ikota River alignment, Eti-Osa, to prevent perennial flooding in the area,” Wahab wrote.
Structures in Oral Estate, Westend, Megamound, and Lekki County have been marked for demolition for encroaching on the river’s right of way. The state government explained that the exercise is part of broader efforts to mitigate flooding, safeguard the environment, and protect lives and property across the state.
