The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has downplayed concerns raised by opposition party members that Nigeria is veering toward a one-party system.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, May 9, Ganduje said the APC cannot be faulted if it gains widespread support and control across the country.

Ganduje, who was accompanied by three senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who have agreed to defect to the APC, stated:

“Some leaders are worried about the prospect of a one-party state. But if such a development happens through democratic means and reflects the will of the people, then it is not something to be feared. A one-party state isn’t imposed—it evolves through negotiation and the appeal of effective governance.

If opposition members are drawn to our party because of the APC’s performance, and they join willingly, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Look at China—one of the strongest countries in the world—and it operates under a one-party system. We’re not deliberately working toward that in Nigeria, but if it becomes the choice of the people, we will not resist it. As the saying goes, ‘Too many cooks spoil the broth’—likewise, too many political parties can complicate governance.”
