A woman has been arraigned before a Kano Upper Shari’a Court sitting in the Post Office area of Kano Municipality for allegedly being married to two husbands simultaneously.
Harira Muhammad Tudun Murtala and her first husband, Sagiru Shuaibu T/Murtala, had been married for six months and were living separately. It was during his visit to her that he allegedly discovered another man in his matrimonial bed, prompting him to alert neighbors about the situation.
Upon appearing in court, the woman initially denied being married to her first husband. However, when the judge instructed her to swear an oath on the Qur’an, she retracted her statement. The second husband, Bello Abdullahi Yankaba, also testified that their marriage had been arranged by her uncle, Abdullahi Umar, after a dowry of N100,000 was paid.
The presiding judge, Khadi Munzali Tanko Soron-Dinki, ordered further investigation by the police and directed that both the woman and her second husband be remanded in custody until May 16.
