The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially addressed the recent arrest of popular social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, better known as Very Dark Man (VDM).
In a statement released earlier today, the agency revealed that VDM was taken into custody following multiple petitions alleging serious financial misconduct. According to the EFCC, the gravity of the accusations made it impossible for the Commission to ignore the matter.
Refuting speculation that the arrest was retaliation for VDM’s outspoken criticism of the agency, the EFCC clarified that his public comments had no bearing on the investigation or the decision to detain him.
EFCC’s Full Explanation
“The EFCC, in line with its mandate to combat economic and financial crimes, invited Martins Innocent Otse in response to several petitions regarding alleged financial misconduct,” the statement read. “Despite repeated invitations sent to his known addresses and communication channels, he failed to appear.”
The agency emphasized that while it condemns VDM’s verbal attacks on its operations, those remarks were not the reason for his arrest. It further stated that any concerns regarding his comments would be handled by the appropriate authorities.
EFCC noted that a proper remand order was secured for his detention, and that VDM has now been granted administrative bail. He will be released once all bail conditions are met.
The Commission concluded by thanking Nigerians for their continued interest in its work, urging the public to allow it to carry out its duties without unnecessary interference. Once investigations are completed, formal charges will follow.
