The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially addressed the arrest of social critic Martins Vincent Otse, also known as Very Dark Man (VDM), following widespread attention.

In a statement released this morning, the Commission confirmed the arrest, stating it was in response to multiple petitions regarding “serious allegations of financial malfeasance” that could not be overlooked.

The EFCC also refuted claims that the arrest was motivated by Otse’s repeated verbal criticisms of its operations.

**”The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in line with its mandate to combat economic and financial crimes, invited Martins Innocent Otse for questioning following a series of petitions alleging his involvement in various financial crimes. Despite several invitations sent to him through his known addresses and communication channels, he failed to comply. These petitions contain serious allegations of financial misconduct that the Commission cannot ignore.

While the Commission acknowledges Otse’s vocal criticism of its operations, it is important to clarify that his arrest was not a result of these attacks. Such actions are regrettable, but the law enforcement agencies are the appropriate bodies to handle them.

The EFCC has the legal authority to detain Otse, just as it does with any other individual under investigation. A Remand Order was duly obtained, and he has been granted administrative bail. He will be released once he meets all the stipulated bail conditions.

The Commission appreciates the public’s interest in its activities. The enthusiasm and strong reactions to its operations are welcomed. However, any suggestions questioning its motives must cease. The EFCC must be allowed to perform its duties impartially. Once investigations are concluded, appropriate charges will be filed.”
