At least 73 people lost their lives, and 393 others were injured in road crashes on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway between January and March.
Figures from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicate that 1,271 individuals were involved in 175 accidents on the busy highway during this period.
According to the report, January saw the highest number of crashes, while February experienced the most fatalities.
Notable accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway between January and March include a fatal crash near Ayetoro in February, which claimed the lives of 9 people; a single-vehicle crash at Fatgbems bus stop in January, which killed 5; and an accident in the Alapako area in March, which resulted in 4 deaths.
A breakdown of the figures shows that 21 people died in January crashes, 30 in February (the highest number for the quarter), and 22 in March.
In terms of injuries, 155 victims were recorded in January, 96 in February, and 142 in March.
The report also stated: “In total, 175 road traffic crashes occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the first quarter of 2025. These accidents led to 393 injuries and 73 fatalities, with 1,271 individuals involved in the crashes between January and March 2025.”
The FRSC report highlights a reduction in the number of crashes and injuries in February and March compared to January, although fatalities increased.
“Using January 2025 as a baseline, there was a 29% reduction in road traffic crashes in February compared to January, and a 6% reduction in March. Additionally, there was a 38% decrease in the number of people injured in February compared to January, and an 8% reduction in March. However, there was a 43% increase in fatalities in February over January, and a 5% increase in March over January,” the report revealed.
