In a major May Day announcement, Governor Monday Okpebholo has increased the minimum wage for Edo State workers from ₦70,000 to ₦75,000, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants.

Speaking at the May Day celebration held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday, May 1, the governor expressed his appreciation for the dedication of workers across the state.

“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 per month for Edo workers,” Governor Okpebholo said. “It’s our way of saying thank you. We believe this increase will make a real difference, and in return, we count on your renewed dedication as we build a better Edo together.”

Governor Okpebholo highlighted several initiatives already taken to enhance workers’ lives since he assumed office. These include converting over 1,000 casual workers many of whom served as cleaners without job security—into full civil service positions. He also revealed the recruitment of 500 new teachers to reduce classroom overcrowding and improve learning outcomes.

Further efforts are underway to evaluate the employment status of more than 3,000 casual teachers, with a view toward full employment. In the health sector, the state has recruited 450 clinical and non-clinical personnel and regularized the positions of 126 contract staff at the Edo State Specialist Hospital to strengthen healthcare delivery and provide stability for health professionals.

The governor also addressed longstanding issues in other sectors, such as clearing salary arrears owed to Edo State Polytechnic staff. In the judiciary, he ensured the proper swearing-in of delayed judicial appointments, enabling the justice system to function more effectively.

Recognizing the importance of continued support beyond active service, Governor Okpebholo announced the approval of health insurance coverage for retirees.

“We believe our responsibility to workers doesn’t end when they retire,” he stated.

With this latest wage increase and a track record of action, Governor Okpebholo’s administration continues to show that worker welfare remains a top priority in Edo State.
