Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly declined an offer to manage the Brazilian national team.
The Italian manager, who is expected to leave Madrid at the end of the season, had been strongly linked with the Brazil job.
According to Marca, Ancelotti traveled to London on Monday, where he was expected to sign a contract with the Brazilian Football Confederation. Although he did not finalize the agreement at the time, he was still considered likely to confirm the move upon his return to Spain on Tuesday.
However, Ancelotti has now decided to reject Brazil’s proposal. He is said to have personally contacted the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues, to inform him of his decision.
Marca reports that the U-turn was prompted by uncertainty over when Ancelotti would be able to officially begin his role. Brazil had expected the 64-year-old to be available in June, but Ancelotti reportedly informed the federation that he wouldn’t be able to start until August.
As a result, Ancelotti will not take charge of the Brazilian national team and could remain with Real Madrid through this summer’s Club World Cup.
Although his departure from Real Madrid at the end of the season still appears likely, Ancelotti is now believed to be weighing a lucrative offer to manage in Saudi Arabia. Reports suggest the contract could be worth €50 million net (£42 million), making it a potentially difficult proposition to decline.
