Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has criticized the nature of Nigerian politics, describing it as “transactional.” He alleged that some politicians go as far as paying youths to insult and attack those advocating for a better future for all Nigerians.

Speaking at an event at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., Obi said:

“People are paid to create confusion. As I stand here now, just check social media — many of those receiving ₦20,000 or ₦40,000 monthly are young people, the very ones we are fighting for. At over 60 years old, I have only a few years left, but we still have a chance to get it right.”
