The Anambra State government has refuted claims that it authorized security agencies to arrest women seen in public without bras or panties.

A video that surfaced on Sunday, February 16, showed a town crier in Abagana, Njikoka LGA, announcing that women without underwear would be arrested, allegedly on the orders of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

However, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on New Media to the Governor, dismissed the claim in a statement released on Monday, February 17.

“The trending announcement by the town crier in Abagana, Njikoka LGA, stating that ladies who move about without underwear would be arrested, is neither from the state government nor Agunechemba Security Outfit,” Opara clarified.

He emphasized that such matters hold no legal basis and are not a priority for the state government, which is focused on tackling criminal activities.

“While this is not to encourage indecent dressing in our communities, it is important to clarify that law enforcement agencies should not be distracted from their primary duty of ensuring security,” the statement added.

The government urged residents to ignore the false announcement and continue supporting security agencies by reporting any criminal activities in their communities.
