Catholic Priest Faces Backlash After Allegedly Flogging 50-Year-Old Teacher Over Lesson Fee Dispute
A Catholic priest is facing intense criticism after being accused of flogging a 50-year-old teacher at the school he oversees.
Reverend Fr. Jude Muokwe, a priest of the Roman Catholic Church in the Awka Diocese, is alleged to have assaulted Mrs. Ikeorah Maureen in her classroom during school hours.
Mrs. Maureen, a widow from Umuanugwo village, Ifitedunu, is a Primary 6 teacher at Angel’s Primary School, Ifitedunu. The incident took place on February 12, 2025.
Reports suggest the altercation occurred after the teacher raised concerns about the priest’s failure to honor a contract regarding the deduction of lesson fees for the pupils. It is believed that this disagreement led to the priest reportedly flogging her.
In a tearful account, Mrs. Maureen, a grandmother, recounted the incident, visibly distressed. She said, “He came and started flogging me and slapping me. He claimed I called a meeting with the teachers, but I didn’t. Look at my face, my back, and my legs.”
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many expressing their dismay over the alleged abuse of power and the violent response to a contractual dispute.
