devastating accident in Nnewi, Anambra State, has claimed the lives of six people, including three young sisters, after a cement-laden truck lost control and crashed into a residential building near the Area Command Bus Stop.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday night, February 16, when the truck, reportedly experiencing brake failure, veered off the road and plowed through multiple structures before slamming into a home. Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying moment, describing how a loud crash sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, drawing residents and passersby to the scene in a frantic rescue effort.

“The truck lost control at Ugwu-Akpati Ozu, Nnewi, and crashed at Me Court Junction near the Nnewi Police Area Command Bus Stop,” an eyewitness stated. “It cleared several structures and people before ramming into a house, killing about five children from one family.”

Among the deceased were three female children from the same parents, along with a female adult and the truck driver. Several others sustained injuries, with some victims trapped under the wreckage. Rescuers worked tirelessly to extricate those buried beneath the debris, while heartbroken family members and onlookers struggled to process the loss.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Margaret Onabe, attributed the crash to excessive speed, brake failure, and loss of control. She revealed that six people—three female children, a male adult, and a female adult—lost their lives, while other victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“Among the deceased, one male adult and one female adult were trapped inside the building. The FRSC rescue team in Nnewi conducted an extrication, and their bodies were transported to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Akammili Umudim, Nnewi,” Onabe said.

The Anambra State Police Command, through its spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, also confirmed the incident, stating, “Preliminary investigations indicate that brake failure was the cause of the accident. Regrettably, six lives were lost, while two others sustained serious injuries.”

The tragedy has left the Nnewi community in mourning, with many calling for stricter enforcement of road safety measures to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
