28-year-old woman, seemingly healthy and with no history of smoking, hypertension, or diabetes, was diagnosed with kidney failure. The cause of her condition was initially unclear. However, further examination revealed that kidney stones had led to pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis.
Despite starting treatment, her condition deteriorated rapidly and unexpectedly. Before long, she reached the stage where a kidney transplant was her only hope. As her health declined, we searched for the underlying cause to prevent a recurrence. Our investigations yielded no answers—until we asked a simple yet crucial question:
“Have you been regularly taking Vitamin C supplements?”
It turned out that this young woman had been consuming excessive amounts of Vitamin C and other supplements, hoping to achieve glowing skin. Unfortunately, this overdose had contributed to the formation of kidney stones, ultimately leading to kidney failure.
Her story serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly harmless supplements, when taken in excess, can have severe consequences.
