Virgil van Dijk acknowledges that Liverpool faces a substantial challenge in finding a replacement for Jurgen Klopp when the German manager steps down at the end of the season.
Van Dijk is still processing the shock decision by Klopp to quit at the conclusion of the ongoing campaign. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s long-term future, the Reds captain believes it won’t impact their ambitions for the current season. In their first game since Klopp’s announcement, Liverpool secured a 5-2 victory over Norwich in the FA Cup fourth round.
However, Van Dijk emphasizes the importance of making the right choice in selecting Klopp’s successor. He acknowledges the significant changes that will come with replacing not only the manager but the entire staff.
“The club will have a big job on their hands, that is well known,” says Van Dijk. “To replace not only the manager but the whole staff and there are so many things that will change.”
Van Dijk expresses curiosity about the direction the club will take and hopes for success in the current era under Klopp. He believes that more clarity about the club’s future plans will come at the end of Klopp’s era.
Regarding his own future in the next era, Van Dijk states, “That’s a big question. I don’t know.”
Liverpool faces challenging tests on Klopp’s farewell tour, with Chelsea visiting on Wednesday and a match against Arsenal next weekend. Van Dijk, however, emphasizes that the team’s approach remains unchanged as they compete for silverware in various competitions.
“Nothing has really changed,” says the Dutch defender. “Obviously things will change at the end of the season and in the new season, but at the moment it doesn’t, and we have to keep doing the same things.” Van Dijk assures that despite varying emotions among players about Klopp’s announcement, the professionalism and standard of training sessions have not dropped in the last few days.
