The Rivers State House of Assembly has alleged that Governor Siminalayi Fubara engaged in unlawful practices concerning recent appointments. Speaker Martin Amaewhule made the accusation during an unscheduled plenary on Monday in Port Harcourt, following the override of the governor’s veto and the enactment of four laws in the previous session.

Major Jack, the Majority Leader, brought attention to the governor’s recent appointments, responsible for overseeing three government parastatals: the Local Government Service Commission, Bureau of Public Procurement, and New City Development Authority. The Speaker emphasized that the appointment process outlined in the law did not include provisions for acting chairmen.

During the debate, some lawmakers questioned the legal standing of the New City Development Authority. The Speaker, expressing concerns about the governor’s actions, accused him of acting tyrannically. The Assembly collectively resolved to send a letter to the governor, cautioning against such actions.

These developments have stirred speculation about whether the Assembly will resume its halted impeachment proceedings against the governor.
