Lyon, currently grappling with their league position, revealed on Saturday that they secured the signing of Nemanja Matic, a former midfielder from Chelsea and Manchester United, from Ligue 1 competitors Rennes for a transfer fee of 2.6 million euros (2.8 million dollars).
The 35-year-old Serbian international had joined Rennes from Roma at the beginning of the season. Despite Lyon’s challenging position in the Ligue 1 relegation zone, Matic committed to a contract with the club until June 2026.
In a statement, the club expressed its excitement, stating, “Olympique Lyonnais is thrilled to have successfully attracted such a charismatic and experienced player.”
Matic, who boasts league titles with Chelsea and Benfica, had made 13 appearances for Rennes this season, with the team currently positioned ninth in Ligue 1.
