Imo Residents Defy Sit-At-Home Order, Gather in Large Numbers for Uzodimma’s Second Term Inauguration
Despite the sit-at-home order issued by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), residents of Imo State turned out enthusiastically on Monday for the inauguration of Governor Hope Uzodimma for a second term. The streets of the state capital, Owerri, were vibrant with residents, adorned in colorful traditional attire, heading to the Dan Anyiam Stadium for the event.
Inside the stadium, citizens awaiting the commencement of the inauguration festivities created a lively carnival-like atmosphere with singing and dancing. President Bola Tinubu, who arrived in Owerri for the occasion, joined the celebration. Governor Uzodimma, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured re-election in a November 11, 2023 election with 540,308 votes, defeating opposition candidates Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Nneji Achonu of the Labour Party (LP).
While both the PDP and LP rejected the election results, Governor Uzodimma extended an olive branch to the opposition in his acceptance speech, urging their support for the state’s development. President Tinubu, before the inauguration, commissioned the newly reconstructed Airport Road in Owerri.
President Tinubu, who visited Owerri after participating in the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja, was warmly received at the Sam Mbakwe Airport by Governor Uzodimma and other dignitaries. The residents of Imo State defied the sit-at-home order in the South-East to partake in the inauguration festivities. The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, were among the dignitaries accompanying President Tinubu to Imo State.
