In their AFCON opener in Ivory Coast, the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Equatorial Guinea’s Elephants on Sunday.

Despite facing injuries to key players like Victor Boniface, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Sadiq Umar, Nigeria, led by African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, began the match energetically. Oshimhen had an early opportunity in the 4th minute but shot wide.

Stanley Nwabali took the goalkeeping role over Francis Uzoho, and Equatorial Guinea’s Iban Salvador stunned Nigeria with a 37th-minute goal. However, the Super Eagles swiftly responded as Alex Iwobi found Osimhen with a cross.

Despite continuous pressure from Nigeria in the second half, Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper, Owono, displayed resilient saves. In the 67th minute, Alhassan Yusuf exited the field on a stretcher, leading to substitutions bringing in Joe Aribo and Samuel Chukwueze.

With limited chances for both teams, Osimhen missed a crucial opportunity in the 76th minute. The Elephants held firm in defense, securing a vital draw against the 2013 champions.
