Mikel Obi, the former captain of the Nigerian football team, has placed the blame for Vincent Enyeama’s premature retirement from the senior national team on former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.
In a scathing critique, Mikel described Oliseh as “absolutely clueless” and “easily the worst manager he played under.” According to Mikel, Oliseh not only orchestrated Enyeama’s departure but also caused division within the national team.
Mikel recounted an incident on his ObiOne podcast, recalling Oliseh’s contentious arrival at the camp for international duties. According to Mikel, Oliseh accused the players, including himself and Enyeama, of having too much player power.
Enyeama, in response, challenged Oliseh, asserting that the team had a positive dynamic, and a heated argument ensued, almost escalating into a physical altercation. Oliseh subsequently removed Enyeama from the team, and Mikel claimed that Oliseh threatened to exclude them as well.
Despite Mikel’s efforts to persuade Enyeama to stay, the goalkeeper left the camp angrily and did not return.
Mikel criticized Oliseh’s managerial skills, stating that he had no understanding of how to be a manager. He asserted that Oliseh was a fantastic player in his time but proved to be a terrible coach, lacking clarity and confusing the players.
According to Mikel, Oliseh’s actions disrupted the team’s unity, and the players struggled to comprehend his coaching decisions. Mikel further expressed that Oliseh exhibited bitterness, jealousy, and a lack of respect for everyone, including the physiotherapists, and described him as the worst manager he had played under. Oliseh’s excuse upon being fired was allegedly attributing his lack of success to voodoo practices by people and the football association.
