Burnley secured the loan signing of Chelsea’s Ivory Coast forward, David Datro Fofana, until the end of the season on Saturday.
Fofana, at 21, becomes Burnley’s initial acquisition in the January transfer window as they strive to avoid relegation from the Premier League. Having observed Burnley’s 1-1 draw against Luton on Friday from the stands at Turf Moor, Fofana is eager to contribute to the Clarets’ campaign.
Previously on loan at Bundesliga side Union Berlin for the first half of the season, Fofana showcased his abilities with two goals in 17 games. Despite catching Chelsea’s attention through his impressive record of 24 goals in 65 appearances for Norwegian side Molde, he is yet to make a mark at Stamford Bridge.
Burnley, with the second-lowest goal tally (21) in the Premier League, are seeking to bolster their attacking options. Manager Vincent Kompany acknowledged the challenge but expressed optimism about Fofana’s attributes.
While Fofana brings speed, playmaking skills, and talent to Burnley, Kompany highlighted the need for realistic expectations, noting that surpassing the consistent performance of existing players may not be immediate.
Fofana, excited about the move, stated, “I have seen a couple of games already and I think this is the right place for me to make the next steps. I have known about Burnley for a long time, they have been in the Premier League before this season and the champions (of the Championship) last year, and I’m now looking forward to being a part of this team.”
