Former Chairman of the Gombe Football Association, Ahmed Gara-Gombe, has expressed skepticism about the capabilities of Super Eagles Head Coach Jose Peseiro, labeling his appointment as one of the greatest mistakes in Nigerian football history. Gara-Gombe shared his views on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
He criticized the lack of a smooth transition and championship without confusion in Nigerian football since the era of Clemens Westerhof. Gara-Gombe expressed a lack of confidence in the football system and asserted that hiring Peseiro for the Super Eagles was a significant error.
Peseiro has faced criticism for the Super Eagles’ recent poor performances and a perceived absence of a distinct playing style. Nigeria’s shaky start to the 2026 World Cup qualification, drawing against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, intensified calls for Peseiro’s removal before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). However, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) opted to retain the Portuguese coach.
Gara-Gombe argued that the Super Eagles’ performance has not improved under Peseiro’s tenure. He highlighted the lack of confidence in the team and the absence of a recognizable playing style, contrasting it with previous eras where fans could easily identify a strong lineup and tactics.
Despite Peseiro’s optimism about Nigeria’s chances in the upcoming AFCON, Gara-Gombe dismissed the Super Eagles’ readiness for the championship, describing their strategy as “cut and paste” and “wobble and fumble.” He suggested that any success in the tournament would be attributed to divine intervention rather than adequate preparation.
