The National Union of Nigerian Students (NANS) is urging the Federal Government to reevaluate the suspension imposed on the accreditation and assessment of degree certificates obtained from neighboring Benin Republic and Togo.

On Tuesday, the Federal Government suspended certificates from these two Francophone West African countries in response to a report revealing the expedited acquisition of a degree from a Benin Republic university within two months.

In a statement issued by NANS Senate President, Akinteye Afeez, the student body commended the government’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of academic qualifications but called for a careful consideration of the decision’s impact on legitimate students who pursued their education in these nations.

NANS pointed out that numerous students have completed one, two, or three years of study, with some having successfully graduated and now eagerly awaiting approval for their evaluation lists to participate in the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) program.

The statement emphasized that these students currently face uncertainty and potential delays in their academic and professional pursuits. NANS advocated for a reassessment, emphasizing the need to distinguish between those engaged in fraudulent activities and the majority of students who genuinely pursued their education.

The body highlighted that Benin Republic and Togo host a significant number of Nigerian students seeking quality education, and a blanket suspension could strain diplomatic and educational relations, affecting opportunities for Nigerian students in these neighboring countries.

The NANS proposal suggests that the Federal Government should reconsider the suspension while maintaining a robust and transparent evaluation process.
