Troops of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army Foil Attempted Lagoon Suicide
In a statement released on Monday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, it was reported that soldiers from the Nigerian Army’s 81 Division prevented a lady from attempting suicide by jumping into the Lagos Lagoon.
The statement read, “Nigerian Army (NA) soldiers operating under 81 Division NA have heroically thwarted a suicide attempt by Mrs. Francesca Spark, who was on the verge of plunging into the Lagos Lagoon near the 81 Division Officers’ Mess in Marina, Lagos.”
The troops of the 65 Battalion NA, deployed at the Officers’ Mess, spotted Mrs. Spark and used their military riverine expertise to swiftly rescue her. They provided her with first aid and ensured her stability with the assistance of the battalion’s medical team.
Following her stabilization, the family was contacted, and she was safely handed over to her husband, Mr. Spark Oghene Ovie, who resides in Awoyaya, Lagos.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 81 Division NA, Major General Muhammed Usman, commended the soldiers for their bravery in rescuing the lady. He expressed his satisfaction that the soldiers applied their training in disaster management to save a fellow citizen’s life.
Major Gen Usman emphasized that such operations are part of the military’s role in responding to emergencies and natural disasters, reinforcing the troops’ commitment to supporting leading agencies during such critical situations.
The GOC reassured residents of the Army’s dedication to protecting lives and properties, even during emergencies.
