Novak Djokovic Overcomes Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3 in Paris Masters Final, Clinching His Record-Extending Seventh Title and Nearing an Eighth Year-End Number One Ranking
The 36-year-old Djokovic surpassed his own record from two years ago by becoming the tournament’s oldest champion, securing his 40th Masters 1000 title and extending his winning streak to 18 matches.
Djokovic now has six titles this season, tying with Carlos Alcaraz. His Masters victory in Cincinnati set the stage for his historic 24th Grand Slam singles crown at the US Open.
“It’s incredible. To win under these challenging circumstances this week,” said Djokovic, who battled a stomach virus throughout the tournament.
In the earlier rounds, he faced the brink of losing three consecutive matches, only to find an extra gear when needed.
Although the scoreline may not fully represent the intensity of the match, Djokovic expressed his pride in his victory, considering the challenges he faced.
As he heads to the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, Djokovic holds a commanding 1,490-point lead over Alcaraz. Last year, he won the tournament for the sixth time after Alcaraz withdrew due to injury.
Dimitrov, 32, was seeking his first Paris title since winning the ATP Finals in 2017. Despite a late-season resurgence with wins over Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, and Stefanos Tsitsipas this week, he suffered his 10th consecutive loss to Djokovic.
Dimitrov held serve comfortably until Djokovic made a decisive move at 3-3 in the opening set, breaking Dimitrov’s serve with a forehand error.
In the second set, both players held serve until Djokovic’s consistency made the difference once again. Dimitrov’s errors with a wild forehand and an errant backhand allowed Djokovic to secure the victory.
Djokovic maintained his lead with another routine hold and broke Dimitrov once more, sealing his 97th career title.
