The Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of the remaining three Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as nominated by President Bola Tinubu. These appointees are Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi representing Lagos State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha representing Rivers State, and Mr. Isma’ila Kaura Moyi representing Zamfara State.
It’s worth noting that these three RECs were absent during the confirmation of the initial seven nominees on Wednesday. The previously confirmed RECs include Mr. Etekamba Umoren for Akwa Ibom, Mr. Isha Ehimeakne for Edo, Barr. Oluwatoyin Babalola for Ekiti, Mr. Abubakar Ahmed for Gombe, Shehu Wahab for Kwara, Aminu Idris for Nasarawa, and Mohammed Abubakar Sadiq for Niger.
This confirmation process aligns with President Tinubu’s request on Wednesday for the Senate to confirm the nominations of these RECs, in accordance with the provisions of Section 154(1) of the Constitution. It’s important to note that Tinubu had previously granted approval for the appointment of 10 new RECs for INEC, each serving a five-year term.
