PDP Expresses Disappointment in Supreme Court’s Ruling Affirming President Bola Tinubu’s Victory
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed its disappointment regarding the Supreme Court’s verdict, which upheld President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 2023 election. The PDP had appealed the ruling of the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC), which had previously validated Tinubu’s win.
On Thursday, the apex court dismissed the appeals from Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), stating that they lacked merit.
In response to the judgment, the primary opposition party, PDP, conveyed its dismay through a statement by its spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba.
“The PDP and, in fact, the majority of Nigerians are deeply concerned and disappointed by the reasoning of the Supreme Court, which the PDP believes runs counter to the explicit provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Guidelines and Regulations issued by INEC for conducting the election,” the statement read.
The PDP asserted that it is disheartening that the Supreme Court did not uphold the law, but instead, it failed to meet the expectations of the majority of Nigerians who looked to it as a bastion of impartiality. They expected substantial justice to be served in accordance with the laws and facts of the case.
The PDP accused the Supreme Court of overlooking “serious issues of forgery, falsehood, and perjury on the grounds of technicalities.”
“The Supreme Court’s ruling has clearly shaken Nigerians’ confidence in the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, which is considered the last resort for the common man,” the PDP stated.
Nevertheless, the PDP encouraged Nigerians not to lose heart or let the judgment deter them from their collective pursuit of establishing a credible electoral system.
