The Supreme Court has scheduled Monday, October 23 for the hearing of an appeal filed by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, seeking to challenge the validity of President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election.
On the same day, the apex court will also address Atiku’s motion to present new evidence, which alleges that President Bola Tinubu submitted a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to a hearing notice obtained by Channels Television on Thursday, the Supreme Court has fixed 9 a.m. on the given date for Atiku’s legal team and President Tinubu’s representatives to present their arguments to a panel of seven Justices. The central question to be determined is whether the court possesses the authority to grant this request.
In addition to the main parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who are respondents in this matter, will also address the court and cite relevant laws to assess the grantability of such a request within the framework of Nigeria’s Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2022.
The documents Atiku intends to submit as evidence include the academic records of Tinubu, which were acquired from Chicago State University on Monday, October 2. These 32 pages of documents were released under the orders of Judge Nancy Maldonado of the District Court of Illinois, Eastern Division, Illinois, United States of America.
