The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed confidence in the potential release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), before the end of 2023. This optimism stems from confidential negotiations currently underway between Ohanaeze and relevant authorities.
Consequently, the organization has called upon all pro-Biafran agitators to refrain from hostilities against the Federal Government for a 40-day period starting on October 31. In a statement issued on Sunday by its Secretary General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze emphasized the need for pro-Biafra agitators to demonstrate discipline during this critical phase to facilitate progress in the ongoing negotiations.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the preeminent socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, is pleased to announce its foresight regarding ongoing confidential negotiations that indicate the possibility of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, regaining his freedom by the end of the year 2023.
“However, to advance this cause, Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges Biafra agitators to observe a 40-day ceasefire, refraining from any offensive actions beginning on October 31, 2023. It is imperative that Biafra agitators maintain discipline during this crucial period.
“The primary challenge we currently face is ensuring that Biafra agitators cease all offensive actions for 40 days, as this will pave the way for the desired solutions to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu.”
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes that engaging with all relevant authorities through diplomatic channels is the most effective approach to achieve our desired results.
“We urge Ndigbo to exercise patience and understanding during this critical period. We recognize the pain and hardship endured by the people of the South-East since the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu. As custodians of our land, we assure you that positive outcomes are anticipated after the November 2023 Imo State governorship elections.
“Ohanaeze is confident that Kanu’s release will undoubtedly come as a welcome surprise to the South-East people. We also appeal to Nigerians whom Kanu may have offended to embrace forgiveness and prioritize the greater interests of Nigeria.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains committed to working behind the scenes, rallying and mobilizing all relevant parties to achieve this crucial objective.
“We humbly request Biafra agitators to remain calm and observe a ceasefire for 40 days. This period of abstinence from offensive aggression will significantly contribute to ongoing negotiations and enhance the prospects of Kanu’s release.”
