The Trade Union Congress announced on Saturday that the suspension of its nationwide strike planned for October 1st is a temporary measure.

The decision hinges on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration’s commitment to fulfilling the conditions outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Federal Government and Organised Labour.

In addition, the labour union rebuffed claims by governors who stated they would not implement the provisions within the MoU, arguing that these governors had already introduced relief measures for state civil servants and residents before the MoU was officially ratified.

Tommy Etim, the National Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress, conveyed these sentiments yesterday.

Speaking about reports suggesting that governors might not adhere to the terms of the agreement, Etim asserted, “That scenario seems unlikely. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that we’ve already reached out to our representatives in the respective states and dispatched letters to that effect.”

Regarding the progress made in negotiations with the government, the labor leader stated, “The 30-day ultimatum we issued remains in effect.

We provided them with ample time, and we have confidence that they are making progress.

Our decision was essentially a temporary suspension, when you suspend a strike, it can be resumed without further notice.

We’ve fulfilled our end of the bargain and now await their response.”
