Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, highlighted a significant shift in the hiring practices of technology companies during a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He emphasized that contemporary companies seek “makers” rather than solely focusing on individuals with formal certificates.

Tijani explained, “Today’s companies value those who create tangible products; they prioritize individuals with the ability to make things, as opposed to those who hold certificates. Consequently, many young people are now finding well-compensated employment opportunities without necessarily pursuing traditional academic pathways.”

While acknowledging the importance of formal education, the minister, who holds a doctorate degree himself, encouraged young people to embrace a balanced approach. He emphasized the significance of both conventional academic learning and the acquisition of modern, practical skills.

Dr. Tijani also mentioned that the Federal Government has plans to establish a hardware training center in Aba, Abia State. He stated that the government is actively exploring partnerships with relevant agencies and is in the process of assembling some of the brightest minds in the country who possess expertise in hardware.

“We are bringing together some of the most distinguished individuals from Nigeria who have a wealth of experience in hardware technology. We have carefully devised a strategy to invest in the development of Aba’s technological landscape, and our vision is to have this center up and running in the next few months.

“This center is not merely duplicating existing efforts; instead, it will be dedicated to fostering innovation in hardware production within the tech sector. It aims to empower local businesses in the region to harness technology for improved operations. Additionally, the center will serve as a hub for nurturing and training a new generation of tech talents,” he explained.
