Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has been released after a lengthy two-year legal battle with the government of Benin.

Igboho officially confirmed his freedom through a statement shared on his Instagram account. In a video accompanying the announcement, he expressed his gratitude and appreciation to various individuals and groups who supported him throughout his ordeal. He titled the video, “My Release in Benin Republic.”

In his own words: “First and foremost, I want to express my deep appreciation to the Almighty God, the sovereign master of the universe, for making this day possible. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all Yoruba sons and daughters worldwide for their unwavering love and support, both during my mother’s passing, who is currently in the morgue awaiting a deserving burial, and throughout my legal journey.

“I am immensely grateful to President Talon of Benin Republic and all members of his cabinet for their roles in securing my release. I also extend my appreciation to my valiant father, Professor Banji Akintoye, and Professor Wole Soyinka for their steadfast support during this struggle. Baba, may God reward you for your unwavering commitment to our Yoruba nation and to me. You stood by me during my ordeal in Benin Republic, fulfilling your promise.

“I would also like to acknowledge former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Baba Ayo Adebanjo for their contributions, even though ultimate freedom is a divine gift. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all religious leaders, be they pastors, Muslim clerics, or traditional worshippers, for their ceaseless prayers.

“Our revered royal fathers, Obas and Chiefs in Yoruba land, your love and support are deeply cherished. We require your continued support to liberate our land from oppression because Yoruba land belongs to us all.

“While I have numerous Obas on my list to thank, I would like to mention a few: Olugbon of Orile Igbon and Deputy Chairman, Oyo State Council of Obas, Oba Francis Olushola Alao; Kabiesi Oba Topspin o ni Bariga of Bariga; Oba Tejuoso, Oni Kenta of Orile Kenta; Olugbo of Ugbo kingdom, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan Obateru, your love means the world to me.

“Lastly, I want to extend my gratitude to Megarally USA under Prophet Ologunloluwa and the Directorate led by Barrister Ogedengbe. Special thanks to Ilana Omo Oodua, Canada, and Igbega Omo Oodua USA and Canada.”

Recall that Igboho was apprehended on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation at Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Republic of Benin, while en route to Germany. His departure from Nigeria followed a violent raid on his residence in Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State, by the Department of State Service (DSS), which accused him of hoarding arms.
