Farmlands, domestic animals, and residential buildings worth millions of naira have been swept away by floods in the Mayo Selbe community of Gashaka Local Government Area, Taraba State.
The flooding occurred following heavy rainfall that persisted throughout Friday night.
This marks the first occurrence of such a natural disaster in the area, resulting in the collapse of a bridge within the community.
Several eyewitnesses, speaking via telephone interviews with Channels Television, are urgently requesting evacuation to higher ground to prevent a recurrence. They are also appealing to relevant authorities for assistance.
The traditional ruler of the community, a third-class chief named Thomas Maiyanga, is earnestly seeking support from both the state and Federal Governments to rebuild not only their homes but also their lives. He emphasized that his subjects have endured immense hardship due to the flood, with most of them losing virtually everything.
Recently, Mustapha Habib, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), revealed that the recent discharge of water from the Cameroon Lagdo Dam could result in further downstream disasters in Nigeria, with Taraba State being one of the states listed as potentially affected. Others at risk include Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Adamawa.
At this point, it remains uncertain whether the flooding is primarily attributable to the released water from the Cameroon Lagdo Dam or the usual heavy rainfall.
