A civil society organization based in the northern region, known as the Mega National Movement for Good Governance, has expressed deep concern regarding the sudden shortage of Premium Motor Spirit (commonly referred to as petrol) in the Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna State, and other major cities across the nation.

During a press conference held in Kaduna on Friday, the group pointed fingers at independent petroleum marketers, alleging that they were responsible for creating this scarcity with the intent of raising fuel prices in the near future.

Ibrahim Tijani, the group’s spokesperson, also voiced apprehension regarding the volatile nature of petroleum product prices, attributing it to the frequent policy changes implemented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). He further highlighted mounting allegations of widespread corruption within the company.

Among its concerns, the civil society group has raised serious allegations of irregularities within the NNPCL, including a petrol subsidy scandal, underreporting of oil sales revenue, questionable pipeline surveillance contracts, and instances of oil theft. These issues, the group laments, have collectively taken a toll on the nation’s economy.

As a result, the group is appealing to President Bola Tinubu to dismiss Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of NNPCL, and launch a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of widespread corruption that have taken root within the company under his leadership.
