In an effort to prevent a nationwide strike scheduled for October 3, the Federal Government is engaging in discussions with organized labor at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, the capital of the nation.
The meeting, convened by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, is currently underway and is being attended by several ministers.
Last Tuesday, the organized labor, which includes the leadership of both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), announced their decision to initiate an indefinite strike on October 3rd.
Furthermore, the unions have urged their respective state chapters to mobilize for nationwide protests following the resolution of their differences. It should be noted that the initial two-day warning strike was conducted solely by the NLC, without the participation of the TUC.
Two days later, the National Executive Council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, issued an appeal to the organized labor, urging them to postpone their planned strike.
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, addressed reporters at the Presidential Villa last Thursday, making a plea to the leadership of the organized labor to exercise patience with the Federal Government and allow more time for dialogue.
Mutfwang also revealed that the welfare of Nigerian workers would be a significant topic addressed by President Bola Tinubu during his upcoming Independence Day broadcast to Nigerians on Sunday.
Following NEC’s appeal, the President’s Chief of Staff called for a meeting to resolve the ongoing industrial dispute with the organized labor.
It is hoped that, in light of these developments, the workers will reconsider their planned strike to prevent disrupting the nation’s economic activities.
