Manchester City’s flawless beginning to the Premier League season was abruptly halted with a surprising 2-1 defeat against Wolves, while Manchester United suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Arsenal narrowed the gap to just one point from the league leaders with a commanding 4-0 victory over Bournemouth, while Aston Villa delivered a stunning 6-1 thrashing to Brighton, securing a place in the top four.

City had triumphed in their first six matches of the season in pursuit of an unprecedented fourth consecutive English top-flight title.

In contrast, Wolves had only garnered four points from their initial six games, but they delivered a stunning upset to the reigning champions at Molineux.

Ruben Dias’ own goal put the home side in front, but City responded after the break through Julian Alvarez’s free-kick.

Wolves, though, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and got their reward when Hwang Hee-Chan swept home at the second attempt 25 minutes from time.

City’s defeat means Liverpool can go top should they end Tottenham’s unbeaten Premier League start under Ange Postecoglou in the 1615GMT kick off.

United have now lost four of their opening seven league games of the season to pile more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Joachim Andersen’s remarkable first-half volley was the sole difference between the two teams at Old Trafford.

In a midweek League Cup clash, United had convincingly triumphed over Palace with a 3-0 scoreline. However, when facing a fully rejuvenated Palace squad, the Red Devils encountered a recurring challenge in the form of their inability to create scoring opportunities, resulting in a struggle to regain control of the match.

This loss has caused United to drop to 10th place in the league standings.
