Burkina Faso’s security and intelligence services successfully thwarted a coup attempt on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, as announced by the nation’s military government.

In an official statement broadcasted on state television, it was reported that “on September 26, 2023, Burkina Faso’s intelligence and security services successfully prevented a verified coup attempt.”

The statement went on to explain that “as of now, authorities have apprehended several individuals, including officers, who were involved in this destabilization endeavor, while efforts to locate others are actively ongoing.”

It was further revealed that the alleged perpetrators had “sinister intentions aimed at attacking the Republic’s institutions and plunging the nation into chaos.”

The military government expressed its commitment to thoroughly investigate this plot and expressed regret that “officers, whose primary duty is to safeguard their homeland, became involved in such a scheme.”

The statement mentioned that four individuals were currently in custody, with two others still evading capture.

Additionally, it was emphasized that the regime initiated the investigation based on “credible allegations concerning a conspiracy against state security involving officers.”

“We deeply lament the involvement of officers who have taken an oath to defend their homeland in an undertaking of this nature, which seeks to obstruct the Burkinabe people’s pursuit of sovereignty and freedom from the terrorist threats that seek to enslave them,” the statement continued.

This incident occurred against the backdrop of a series of events, including two military coups in the preceding year, triggered in part by the escalating insurgency by armed groups associated with al Qaeda and the Islamic State, which have destabilized not only Burkina Faso but also its neighboring nations.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the leader of the junta, assumed power on September 30, 2022, marking the country’s second coup in eight months.
