The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of Yemi Cardoso as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), along with four other individuals who will serve as deputy governors within the apex bank.
This confirmation took place following their thorough scrutiny by the upper legislative body on September 26. The deputy governors who received the Senate’s approval are Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello.
“The nomination of Olayemi Cardoso is now officially confirmed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN),” announced Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Prior to their confirmation, the nominees underwent a comprehensive questioning session related to economic and other policy matters. During the screening process, Cardoso made a commitment to prioritize compliance, ensuring that under his leadership, the apex bank would maintain a steadfast apolitical stance.
“I firmly believe that during our tenure at the Central Bank, we will wholeheartedly adopt a culture of compliance. We won’t wait for external oversight to dictate our actions; rather, we will proactively identify and address issues as they pass through our purview,” Cardoso stated. He further pledged an unwavering commitment to zero tolerance for non-compliance and abuse, emphasizing that this transformation would require a cultural shift and a change in mindset, both of which he was determined to instigate. “Rest assured, we will make it happen,” Cardoso affirmed.
