Olympic gold medalist Walewska Oliveira has tragically passed away at the age of 43.
Oliveira was a celebrated volleyball player who proudly represented Brazil. Her remarkable career culminated in a gold medal victory at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Prior to this achievement, she had already showcased her talent at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where she secured a bronze medal. Oliveira’s commitment to her sport led her to compete once more at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
She passed away in Sao Paulo, and as of now, the cause of her death has not been officially confirmed to the public.
Oliveira, who made her debut for Brazil in 1998, played a pivotal role in helping her country secure a World Championship silver medal. Additionally, she was a key contributor to the team’s two World Cup final appearances.
In the wake of this devastating news, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) expressed their sorrow and profound regret, stating, “With deep sadness and immense sorrow, the CBV received the heartbreaking news of the passing of Olympic champion Walewska on Thursday night.”
During this challenging period, CBV extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the legendary player.
CBV President Radames Lattari further expressed, “Walewska was an extraordinary athlete, and her legacy in the world of sports will always be cherished and celebrated. During these trying times, CBV stands in solidarity with the loved ones of this remarkable player.”
Oliveira retired from the sport in 2022, and when announcing her decision, she reflected, “My career has been a beautiful journey. I have immense gratitude for everyone involved, especially Praia Clube, for concluding my career here and for being a part of this incredible team.”
“I will treasure this moment for the remainder of my life.”
Oliveira’s illustrious career saw her don jerseys for 11 different clubs, spanning Italy, Spain, Russia, and her native Brazil.
Praia Clube, her final team, where she had two memorable stints, expressed, “The world of Brazilian volleyball and the entire sports community mourn the loss of a genuine legend. Our hearts go out to her family and friends during this challenging period.”
