Comedian and actor Akunyota Akpobome, widely recognized as Alibaba, asserted on Friday that some aspiring artists engage in mysterious rituals before securing a record label contract.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Alibaba argued that these traditions represent just one of numerous factors contributing to the blind spots experienced by young artists.

His remarks coincide with the escalating public outcry surrounding the allegations of abuse endured by the late 27-year-old singer, Ilerioluwa Olademeji, who was also known as Mohbad, until his passing on September 12th.

“From my perspective, there are certain actions one should avoid, and it’s crucial to stay committed to that principle. This also applies to certain artists; some of them are now engaging in rituals,” Alibaba remarked.

“As an artist, it’s essential to clarify your purpose and embrace the core values instilled in you.

“If you possess creative abilities and find yourself in a position of influence, there’s no need for unnecessary pressure. Creativity should flow freely without the imposition of signatures or oaths.”

According to the performer, a strong desire for fame and success is displacing the core principles of some artists, leading to the emergence of peer pressure in this context.

“People have a desire to shine; they yearn to be seen, heard, and prosperous, all while seeking a sense of belonging. Consequently, some may stray from the values instilled in them from a young age, engaging in actions they know they shouldn’t,” he explained.

Alibaba argued that certain artists manage to flourish within the entertainment industry, even under its immense pressures.

“They abstain from smoking, eschew cigars, forgo holding a glass of whiskey in their music videos—firmly maintaining this stance,” he remarked.

“Even when choreography suggests that such elements could enhance the visual appeal, they steadfastly refuse.”

An artist and producer, Olawale Luqman, who was also a guest on the show, highlighted the challenges faced by young, aspiring artists when presented with contracts. He explained that these emerging talents often become enthralled and feel pressured to sign contracts without fully comprehending their implications.

“They often act impulsively, without considering the specifics of the contract; their primary goal is just to secure the deal. Labels strategically present lucrative figures, tempting them into quick decisions,” Luqman remarked.

“What these artists may not realize is that the apparent advance payment of $100,000 is, in fact, a loan. They are expected to repay this amount through their hard work or other means.”

This lack of awareness and understanding often leads to artists becoming ensnared in unfavorable record label agreements, leaving them with limited recourse. Luqman further explained that some artists don’t even formalize their arrangements through contracts; instead, they might be initiated into a label with an informal understanding, or in some cases, without any contract at all.
