On Monday, the Spanish Football Federation called upon 39 striking players to rejoin the women’s national team, in anticipation of the first squad announcement by the new coach, Montse Tome.

Spain clinched the Women’s World Cup title in August, but the four weeks that followed have been marred by controversy and turmoil stemming from former president Luis Rubiales’ inappropriate actions towards midfielder Jenni Hermoso.

In response to Rubiales’ refusal to step down from his position, the entire World Cup squad and numerous other players initiated a strike in protest. This mass action prompted the 46-year-old president to eventually resign, driven by the unprecedented level of criticism he faced, and he now faces legal ramifications related to sexual assault and coercion following the incident. Additionally, the controversial coach Jorge Vilda was dismissed in the aftermath of the controversy.

Despite these changes, 39 players, including the majority of the World Cup champions, have chosen to abstain from returning until specific conditions are met, including a restructuring of certain departments within the Spanish federation (RFEF).

Spanish reports on Monday stated that none of the 39 players still on strike would make themselves available for the squad to face Sweden and Switzerland in the Nations League, which Tome will announce at 16:30 local time (14:30 GMT).

“Players are encouraged to join this change led by the federation, understanding that the ongoing changes need to be solid and fair,” said the RFEF, currently led by interim president Pedro Rocha.

The statement appears to be a last-ditch attempt to lure the players, including two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, back.

The RFEF has acknowledged that recent days have brought about “challenging decisions,” and the process of change will persist as the federation recognizes the necessity for structural reforms.

The RFEF is steadfast in its commitment to providing a secure environment for players and fostering a climate of mutual trust. This dedication is geared towards facilitating collaboration and driving the advancement of women’s football.

Furthermore, the RFEF emphasizes the importance of showcasing the star on the shirt, symbolizing the hard-earned World Cup victory achieved by the national team through their tireless efforts.
