Students from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) staged a protest against the recent increase in school fees and various additional charges for services provided by the institution.
The entrance to the institution was barricaded by students, with members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at the forefront of the protest, demanding that the school authorities reverse the fee increase.
Holding up a variety of placards bearing different messages to express their demands, the students are urging for a swift reversal in light of the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
The university’s tuition and additional fees were raised from N40,000 to N160,000 per academic session.

“As a union, we have been having serious engagements with the university authorities before it was not brought to N110,000,” the school’s SUG president Longmun Dakon told Channels Television.
He said the hike in fees is “unaffordable to students. It is on the high side and of course, a lot of students would drop out of school”.
Amid the protest, the school’s Dean of Students Affairs Prof Christopher Piwuna assured the students that the fee hike is of concern to the authorities and is receiving their attention.
“Our engagements haven’t produced the desired outcomes, and that’s evident. However, from our perspective, we remain committed to ongoing discussions,” he emphasized.
