The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal has disqualified Idris Dankawu from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for submitting a forged West African School Certificate (WAEC) during his candidacy for the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives Constituency in Kano State.
Munir Babba Danagudi, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who contested against Idris Dankawu, has filed a petition alleging that Dankawu presented a fraudulent Secondary School Certificate to gain admission into Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic in Kaduna.
Subsequently, in response to the petition, Justice I.P. Chima delivered a verdict that reverberated throughout the political landscape. He declared, “Idris Dankawu of NNPP has been found to have forged his WAEC certificate,” and as a result, the election has been invalidated.
The tribunal’s actions did not end with that decision. It went further to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to invalidate the Certificate of Return that had previously been given to Dankawu. Instead, the tribunal declared Danagudi as the rightful winner of the Kumbotso Federal Constituency poll held on February 25, 2023.
Justice Chima underscored the tribunal’s strict adherence to the law, affirming, “Having thoroughly considered the provisions of the law, we hereby declare Munir Babba Danagudi as the victor of the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives Election.”
The ruling concluded with a directive for the respective parties to cover their own expenses.
