The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, convened in Jos, Plateau State, has officially affirmed Simon Lalong, the former governor of the state and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the rightful and duly elected representative for the Plateau South senatorial district.
Chairman of the three-member panel, Justice Mahmoud Tukur, ruled that the votes received by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Napoleon Bali, in the February 25 election were deemed invalid due to his improper nomination.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on Monday, it was determined that at the time of his nomination, the PDP lacked a valid organizational structure within the state.
Based on other instances of over-voting and the failure to adhere to electoral laws, the panel has determined that the petitioners were unable to substantiate their claims.
In a similar vein, the PDP relinquished its hold on the Barkin-Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency seat to the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Dalyop Chollom.
The tribunal’s verdict was rooted in the determination that Peter Gyenden of the PDP had not been duly nominated at the time of his candidacy, citing his party’s lack of a valid structure in the state.
