Kano State High Court has overturned the suspension of the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) from the party.

Justice Usman Na’aana issued an interim injunction on Tuesday, restraining Boniface Aniebonam, Agbo Major, and 16 other respondents from presenting themselves as national officers or leaders of the party until the motion of notice is heard and determined.

The judge also invalidated the purported suspension of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as a member of the NNPP (National New Progressive Party).

On August 29, 2023, a group led by NNPP chieftains, Aniebonam and Major, suspended Kwankwaso for six months due to his association with politicians outside the NNPP.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, finished fourth in this year’s presidential election.

The Aniebonam and Major group, which controls the NNPP Board of Trustees, asserted that there is “substantial evidence” in the public domain confirming Kwankwaso’s involvement in “activities against the party” during various meetings and political discussions. These discussions included interactions with President Bola Tinubu, who was then a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as his counterparts from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party (LP)’s Peter Obi.

As a result of his failure to appear before the Disciplinary Committee, the group decided to expel Kwankwaso.

Additionally, the Aniebonam and Major group accused Kwankwaso of financial misconduct in relation to the mishandling of public funds.

However, a court in Kano has issued an order restraining Aniebonam, Major, and 16 other respondents from representing themselves as party officials. The court has scheduled a hearing for October 5, 2023, to address the matter.
